Business Writing Skills
Proceeding through the Training

This course contains training in the best practices that will enable you to write clear, well-organized, effective e‑mails, memos, letters, reports, and other business documents. In the column to the left, you see buttons that will link you to the sections of the training. Each section contains training in a specific set of skills.

The first section, for example, contains training in the skills that will enable you to plan your writing so you write well-organized documents. When you click on the "Pre-write" button, you will see a list of the lessons that teach the skills. The first is "Follow email protocol and etiquette." Read that lesson. When you have finished reading it, fill out the form that will send a notice to your instructor that you have finished reading the lesson. Then click on the next lesson's title, "Set goals." Read that lesson.

When you have finished the lessons in a section, click on the "Return to the Main Menu" button to return to the list of sections. The next section is the first competency examination. Click on it to see the instructions for the first examination.

Follow through the entire course in this way. If you have questions, send an email to your instructor at assignments@businesswriting.com

Competency Examinations

Embedded in the sequence of explanations are four competency examinations requiring you to demonstrate your ability to use the skills taught in the explanations. Complete them as explained in the materials.

Activities

The course contains 12 practice activities. The activities are optional. You may complete just the competency examinations to demonstrate your mastery of the skills. If you choose not to complete an activity and do not demonstrate mastery of the skills you would practice in the activity, your instructor may ask you to complete the activity before revising the competency examination to demonstrate your mastery of the skill. When you complete the practice activities, put in assignments@businesswriting.com as your instructor's email address so the assignments are logged in before going to the instructor.
